Subject: Smiley Bros. Salmon Harvest

Cylvia, Thanks for returning my call today it was really great to talk with you. As I indicated in our chat the salmon harvest this year has been extraordinary and we received 1,200 returning hatcher salmon. We've supplied some 3-4,000 lbs to the Metro Area Meals on Wheels, 2-3 dinners to our local Assisted Living Facilities in tillamook County, with Laura Swanson leading the volunteers and coordinating the overall effort. CS Fishery, located at the old Tillamook Bay Boathouse, provided the ice, totes, cleaning and fillet services together with cold storage. Meals on Wheels was willing to pay the front end cleaning and fillet costs which helped with processing and fund raising efforts has left us with a little over $5,900 in the bank. We have an estimated 6,000 lbs of salmon in cold (frozen) storage for further processing or transport. Costs to can are $2 per 7.5 oz can and labeling runs $.60 - .70 cents per can.

Having worked at Oregon Economic Development I fully understand that the answer the unasked question is always - no. So I contacted Dave Harlan, Ports Mgr. @ Biz Oregon to see if there was any funds that might be eligible and available to help offset the cost of canning as a Port pass through grant. He thought there might be and responded to me that there were some funds and that he would have to meet with his boss (Lynn I believe) to see if the idea or concept could gain sufficient traction to move forward. He meets with his boss on Monday. Your background, understanding and activist role in fighting rural hunger, especially in grades K-12 and with the elderly has been solid and unwavering. If its appropriate for you to weigh in and support our request, we would be very grateful and it would be great.

I have contacted Val Folkema, Port of Garibaldi, and asked her to vet our request request for assistance with the Port Commission and to initiate a request if the Commission was agreeable. She said she would do so earlier today. Melanie Olson is the Biz OR Coordinator for Tillamook County and will forward the request to Dave and the Department, which will get the ball rolling.

Your visit with us two years ago and with the NeahKahNie Students engaged in the Salmon Harvest is still a High Point for everyone involved in the effort. Your understanding of the food and nutrition issues in Rural Oregon is well above the average Oregonian and you have been an excellent Champion of all efforts to address that growing issue.

The Smiley Brothers both Thank you and have great appreciation for your continuing efforts and support of productive solutions!
