Cylvia, thanks for forwarding this. There are strong echoes of what we’ve been up to here. Tony Wagner, the education specialist who Friedman quotes at length, mentions the Hewlett Foundation’s Deeper Learning Initiative as an example of how we can create schools that emphasize the preparation of “innovation-ready” graduates; we are one of a handful of states working closely with this initiative to promote these approaches locally. Likewise, our plan for a student-centered data system should help realize the vision for the “digital portfolio” that Wagner describes, and our work on teacher preparation, support, and development also points in the direction he recommends.
The biggest obstacle we face may be simply the difficulty of reimagining an education system that worked pretty well for those who have power and influence today. The implications of this for resource allocation, for example, are significant. Columns like Friedman’s can help.

Some very good stuff here on the need to reinvent the economy and education system.

Friedman nails it again. He also misses an opportunity to point out an even more pressing dilemma: Millions of unemployed, middle-aged Americans find themselves facing the same problem. How do they reinvent, re-imagine or re-engineer themselves when they also have to put food on the table? The implications reach far beyond the kitchen table.
