Subject: Reconnecting RE: OR-GPI Analysis and Status Updates
Hi everyone,
Thank you for your patience during the hiatus in communication regarding our work on Oregon’s GPI analysis. Personal constraints forced me to shift GPI work to the backburner for a while, so I wanted to check in with you now and provide an update on the status of the research.
Michael and I have been working from the collective research products of the class to prepare a draft suitable for submission to Ecological Economics or another appropriate publication. We have identified a few gaps in our original research, and have made progress toward filling those in. We are rebuilding our original excel calculator, including more comprehensive data where needed, confirming and backing up links to all formulas and data sources used, and taking additional steps to increase transparency in the process of compiling OR-GPI figures. Our aim is/has been to enhance the legitimacy of our conclusions and match the quality of research found in previously published GPI studies.
With this in mind we expect to deliver a final draft for internal comment and revision by the end of April, and submit for editorial consideration soon after that. This is our most realistic deadline given our respective financial and time constraints in relation to other jobs and projects we're engaged in at this time.
Going forward, Michael will serve as primary point-of-contact and representative at external engagements. He's expressed great interest in joining the upcoming practitioners' conference and is applying for university travel funds. (Lew, I hope we can still request a seat for him, if possible.) I personally won’t be able to join this year though I appreciate the invitation and look forward to hearing about the proceedings.
With Michael's experience as a researcher, his network of contacts as a multiple degree student at PSU, and familiarity with the unique character of Oregonian politics as a longtime resident of the state, I recommend him as the best rep for discussion of our work overall. I think you’ll find him a valuable contributor.
We're both excited to continue our involvement in the movement toward integration of alternative metrics into the toolkits of decision-makers worldwide and continue to take advantage of any opportunities to spark interest within our respective networks, so please do keep us updated on any related developments (incl. any we may have missed).
With the help of Bob, Ida, and PSU, we've also had the opportunity over the past several months to connect with a variety of folks that have been and will continue to be valuable contributors toward our efforts. In October ‘12, we presented our work and a general overview of GPI to a grad U of O class on Sustainability Planning and Indicators. We have spoken informally with several university administrators about possibilities for continuation/housing of the project in the future. We've also recently found allies at the Dept. of Environmental Quality (DEQ), who have offered help in enriching the environmental indicators in our report and apply our results to real policy questions. In particular, Bob has connected us with one individual who plans to advocate for GPI and similar efforts in upcoming state agency meetings.
Apologies for the delays in completing this report, due to our other obligations, but we're confident you’ll find it worth the wait and look forward to receiving your feedback upon our forthcoming draft. We greatly appreciate your patience, ongoing support, and look forward to continuing our collaboration.
Best regards,
-Nicole
