Dear Cylvia: Thank you for your email. I have attached an application and
our funding guidelines. Our Contribution Committee meets quarterly, with
the next meeting being held in August. I am not sure all members will be
here prior to the next meeting, but I can see if they are able to review
your application electronically prior to that time. We support various
vulnerable children/family programs in Central Oregon and understand the
support needed to fill a primary need of a family - food.
Best of luck with your project. - Mary Jo

Subject: Helping hungry kids in rural Oregon
Greetings Dick and Mary Jo,
As per my phone message, information on the Summer Food Project is below
and attached.
I am still amazed, and saddened, that Oregon has one of the highest hunger
rates in the nation. More than HALF of all our students live in households
with income levels low enough to qualify for free or reduced cost lunches.
These kids are at grave risk of hunger during the summer when school
lunches are not available. That’s why I am volunteering to help grow
support for the Summer Food Program.
The summer food program helps feed children at schools, parks and community
sites during the summer beak, while also providing activities and a safe
place to go.
Over the past two years mini-grants from Oregon businesses have supported
the Summer Food Program and made sure that many more children are eating
and ready to learn come fall. In 2010, these private donations leveraged
$597,967 in federal funds for meals, a 374% rate of return on the donor’s
original investment.
Unfortunately, rural communities are greatly under-represented in this
important program.
I am working to help raise $50,000 so that many more rural communities can
feed children this summer. I am contacting my friends in the Central and
Southern Oregon business community to help support this important program.
I am inviting (gently arm-twisting) you to consider having Les Schwab make
a $5k donation to the Summer Food for Kids Program. These are hard times
and our neighbors are hurting. I ask you to do what you can to make sure
our kids get enough to eat this summer.
See the attached flyer for 501(c)(3) verification info.
Please let me know what you decide.
If want to call for more detailed information please call Jennifer Lindsay
at 503-595-5501, extension 309, or email her at jennifer@oregonhunger.org
